How to Choose the Right Container: A Buyer's Guide

ConTrader2 min read

New or used? 20 or 40 feet? High cube or standard? A practical guide to help you choose the container that fits your needs and budget.

Buying a container is a significant decision — whether you need it for storage, transport, or conversion. This guide walks you through the key questions to ask before purchasing.

1. New or used?

New containers (so-called one-trip) have made just a single journey from the factory and are practically flawless. Used containers are significantly cheaper, and with a valid CSC certificate remain fully functional for storage and transport.

  • New (one-trip): ideal for long-term use, conversions, and representative locations
  • Used (cargo-worthy): the best price-to-quality ratio for transport
  • Used (wind & watertight): an affordable option for static storage

2. Which size?

Standard sizes are 20 and 40 feet. A 20-foot container (33 m³) covers most storage needs, while 40 feet (67 m³) makes sense when space is cheap and cargo is voluminous. High cube versions add 30 cm of extra height — crucial for shelving or conversions.

3. What to check during inspection

The golden rule: always inspect a container from the inside in daylight, with the doors closed. If you see pinpoints of light — the roof leaks.

Also check the door seals, floor condition, and signs of corrosion on the roof edges. Every container we sell comes with photos of its actual condition and the option of an in-person inspection.

Conclusion

The right choice depends on the purpose: for transport you need a valid CSC, for storage a WWT unit is enough, and for conversions a one-trip pays off. Not sure? Get in touch — we are happy to help.
